Description: Commercial shellfish growing areas of the state where shellfish are grown or harvested to go into commerce for food must be classified according to standards provided by the National Shellfish Sanitation Program (NSSP). The NSSP is a cooperative program of participating states, industry and the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Pollution sources that could affect the safety of shellfish must be evaluated, and growing areas are classified according to this risk assessment. Only some estuaries in Oregon have been evaluated for pollution sources and are designated NSSP growing areas. Coos Bay, Netarts, South Slough, Tillamook, Umpqua, and Yaquina are the only regions where shellfish can be harvested and sold commercially. Within this sub-group of designated estuaries in Oregon, the estuaries themselves are divided into management areas where shellfish can be commercially harvested for food based on water quality and other criteria. These classifications are ‘Approved’, ‘Conditionally Approved’ and ‘Prohibited’.
